A discovery flight is a hands-on introduction to flight training that can serve as your first flight lesson. It gives you a smaller-scale look at what learning to fly is actually like before making a larger commitment.

It's also one of the best ways to experience the culture of a flight school, see how its instructors teach, and find out how comfortable you feel in a small airplane at 3,000–4,000 feet.

What Happens During a Discovery Flight?

A typical discovery flight is about a one-hour experience.

You'll meet with a flight instructor, have an opportunity to ask questions, and usually tour the facility. From there, you'll head to the airplane, complete the preflight inspection and checklists with your instructor, and prepare for takeoff.

You'll typically spend around 30 minutes in the air, and once you're flying, your instructor will give you the opportunity to take the controls and actually fly the airplane yourself.

Does a Discovery Flight Count Toward Your Pilot License?

Yes. When conducted as flight instruction with a certificated flight instructor and properly logged, the flight time from your discovery flight can count toward the flight experience required for your pilot certificate.

That means you're not just going for an airplane ride—you're beginning your flight training.

Why Is a Discovery Flight Important?

A discovery flight lets you experience things that are difficult to understand from a website, phone call, or tour.
