Is there classroom training?

Yes, although classroom and ground training can look different depending on the flight school and training program.

Flight training consists of both flight instruction and ground instruction. Ground training teaches the knowledge behind what you're doing in the airplane—including weather, navigation, regulations, aircraft systems, flight planning, aerodynamics, and decision-making.

What Types of Classroom Training Do Flight Schools Offer?

Depending on the school, ground training may include:

• Traditional classroom courses with groups of students

• One-on-one ground lessons with your flight instructor

• Online ground school completed independently

• Preflight briefings to prepare for the upcoming lesson

• Postflight debriefings to review performance and identify what to improve

• Group seminars, workshops, or safety meetings

• Dedicated ground lessons when weather prevents flying

Some larger academies and college aviation programs use scheduled classroom courses extensively, while many Part 61 schools combine online learning with personalized instruction from the student's flight instructor.

Every flight also involves learning outside the airplane. Preflight briefings prepare you for the objectives of the lesson, while postflight debriefings help you understand what went well, what needs improvement, and what comes next.

Pilot Round-Tables

Skybound also hosts pilot round-tables every other week that anyone can attend.

Students gather as a group while two instructors lead a discussion or presentation on a selected aviation topic. These sessions give students an opportunity to learn beyond their individual lessons, ask questions, hear perspectives from other pilots, and become more involved in the aviation community.

Which Type of Ground Training Is Best?

There isn't one format that's best for everyone.

Online ground school is excellent for learning foundational material at your own pace. One-on-one instruction allows an instructor to address your specific questions and weaknesses. Group sessions expose you to questions, experiences, and perspectives you may not encounter on your own.

A strong training program can use all three.
