The cost and timeline details listed below are estimates, and will vary based on how quickly you learn and progress through each stage. We've listed what is typical, or average, for most. You may progress quicker, or you may take a little longer. Your costs accrue by hour, so the quicker you progress, the more you will reduce your costs.
STEP 1
COST: $125

DISCOVERY FLIGHT
Discovery flights are an adventure you will never forget! You'll get to fly the plane and take photos! Bring a friend for $50 extra! If you decide to take lessons, you can log your hours for this flight!

STEP 2
COST: $15,000
REQUIRED HOURS: 40 HOURS
TIMELINE: 3-4 MONTHS
PRIVATE PILOT
The average person will complete this stage in 3 months, but it can be completed in 6 weeks if you fly 4 days a week and study. We'll make sure you are a proficient pilot and easily pass your written test and checkride!
STEP 3
COST: $15,000
REQUIRED HOURS: 40 HOURS
TIMELINE: 3-4 MONTHS
INSTRUMENT RATING
Earning your instrument rating is the next step in your journey. It requires a total of 40 hours of instrument time, some of which you will log during your private stage. The average person will complete this stage in an additional 3 months, and an additional $15,000.
STEP 4
COST: $40,000
REQUIRED HOURS: 170 HOURS
TIMELINE: 3-6 MONTHS
COMMERCIAL PILOT
Earning you commercial rating means you can now earn money as a pilot! It requires a total of 250 hours, 80 of which you will have already logged up until this point. You will now open doors to several career options and ways to earn money as a pilot!
STEP 5
COST: $3,000
REQUIRED HOURS: VARIES
TIMELINE: 3-4 Weeks
CFI CERTIFICATION
Becoming a CFI is a great stepping stone, or career. CFI's typically earn between $25-$45 per hour! You also get to log all of the hours you fly, so it's a great way to build the 1,500 hours that airlines require, if you are pursuing an airline career! These additional 3-4 weeks of training will develop your skills to teach others.
